La Chanca

The Chanca before

The chanca was the hub of Conil’s fishing industry in times gone by. Fish of all varieties were bought and sold here throughout the ages. Tuna had been caught, processed and distributed the length and breadth of the Roman Empire from long before the present medieval building was constructed, Though the Chanca fell into disuse decades ago, Conil tuna is still renowned from Tokyo to San Francisco in the sushi world.

During the Franco area the building was used by the notorious, old Guardia Civil to hold, torture and execute political dissenters, or those not liked by someone or other holding power.

Now undergoing restoration and conversion into a cultural centre, I hope there will be some sort of memorial to those who lost their lives, as a reminder of what can happen when our freedoms are taken away, or when we let them slip away from our grasp.

Today, we have to me more careful than ever lest fascism raise its ugly head once more.

Conversion to a CULTURAL centre?? Isn’t that sort of like turning Auschwitz into a theme park? It doesn’t gel. Torture. I swear to GOD I do not know how anyone can torture anyone//animal.

Rules on comments

As the comments sections are not intended to be general forums, comments are expected to bear some relevance to the subject of the post. Nevertheless, I do allow some generous leeway in this, particularly if I judge the comment to be of special interest.

Although I'm only too happy to link to your posts, those posts should be your own work, and not the work of others, due to copyright issues.
