Congratulations Leicester City!

Leicester City 2016

REVENGE AT LAST!

From a Syston boy living in Conil de la Frontera, Spain, and old enough to remember Leicester losing to Spurs in the 1961 FA Cup Final. Ignominious defeat is behind us this day!

They say we all love a winner and they’re right. But there’s something even more relatable when the one that wins is the improbable, the up to that moment, unlikely to do it. In the case of the Foxes, down to the Spurs’ tie that ‘gave’ them the championship, it was all so perfect that at times their campaign itself elicited thoughts of hope and redemption almost completely unrelated to sports, or the modern game of football.
When the little ones win, there’s also this tragic realization that such a moment is more fragile than when a big ass name does it, because it can’t possibly last. Almost the inevitability of thought, forged by years of frustration and shortcomings, of getting almost there but still no cigar, or more often, of being utterly humiliated, that we may as well savor the moment, and do it fast and do it often, until it’s all sucked dry.
The Leicester championship was essentially a beautiful arch, big and generous enough to allow anyone to join in and take it with them as a personal victory. May these heroes live long, or until the next season, when they will probably return to the little pond from which they’ve emerged, or till the big bucks come calling, when such a return will be all but impossible.
Or may a new cycle be written, one that’ll add them to the selected few to whom winning is routine, and an almost boring one at that, if you ask me. They’ll still be fresher than anyone else and like kids, still sticky by so much candy and kisses throw at them by the eternally grateful and everyone one else who got shaken by such a happy blue wave of optimist and hope.
Yes, Congratulations, Leicester, the city and its team, and exiles and expats, who’ll never cease to love you. Like Bryan; have a great, inebriated time, my friend, long overdue and forever deserving. Cheers
