Damien Hirst conducts huge sacrifice

Damien Hirst, eh?  What a card! The conceptual artist (to the rest of us a conceptual artist is an artist who can’t draw) showed us the meaning of the word ephemera in an exhibiton entitled In and Out of Love earlier this year. I just read about it somewhere.

Now, if you thought ephemera were postcards, and bits of paper, and stuff, they’re not just that. Even though he doesn’t use the word, Damien showed us the ephemeral nature of nine thousand butterflies by having them flap round an art gallery till they became exhausted and died. A sort of latter-day Aztec sacrificial indulgence modified so as not to offend contemporary sensibilites, I suppose. Besides, even if the Tate did allow human sacrifice, you can’t get hold of enough willing virgins these days. Read more

I don’t try to read much into Damien Hirst, simply because I don’t think there’s too much there in the first place.

He’s always out to shock, but that becomes harder as he gets older.

The diamond encrusted skull was something you expect a coke dealer to have on his mantelpiece. As an art lover, I find it difficult to judge whether it was a waste of diamonds, or a waste of a good skull. Whichever, one thing is sure, it probably contains as much living brain matter as Damien’s.

Noeleen, you spoli me. But keep it coming. Your encouraging words always have me thinking what’s next?

Your articles are so damn choice, Bryan. You write so well, clearly, eloquently. I LOVE your words on this.

With the title ‘In & Out of Love’ I could not help imagining the concept was ‘When I’m in love you’re my beautiful butterfly, but when I’m out of love you’re a dead being impaled on the canvass of my life, & the more of you that are dead impaled there, the better’.

What WAS the concept? I still don’t get it.

AND I LOVE the Black Sheep act of conceptual art. ‘Vandalism’ is just not the right word, for that masterpiece.
